Driving Mongolia

Most of the roads in Mongolia are simple dirt track’s with no sign where is leading to. The only orientation is a by bearing to your destination which is also makes a quite interesting place for you to navigate yourself by GPS and maps. Generally most of the road’s aren’t very hazardous except if it rains continuously for few days and the hard dirt track’s become muddy, but for most of the days it’s dry clear dusty trails with occasional small water pots along the track after a rains.

There are thousand’s road all which is unique by themselves variable in size, bearing, worn condition and attitude. Some people may wonder why road’s have attitudes and where this none sense terms comes out it’s because out in the plains there are many roads some of which belongs to nomads who inhabit this vast grassland and due to the conditions of grass and environment they move up 10 times a year so simple track can lead you to nowhere in fact it can end right up in the middle of grassland and the probable cause for this would be simple, “nomad moved” to his wintering or summer place.  So this becomes a little challenge to identify the correct road but after a few hours of driving you will naturally be able to identify the correct roads by it’s size and bearings.

According to statistics only 10% of all roads in Mongolia is hard asphalt paved but since late 90’s Mongolia government started to implement “Millennium road” project which is due to connect this country with it neighbors North to South and West to the East. The North to South road which links Russia and China is nearly finished only a few hundred km to go to Chinese border.

The other longitude track connecting West to the East so far  made it’s way to provincial town Undurkhan in Khentii aimak about 350Km from Ulaanbaator and the Western part has been halted in about 250 Km in small provincial soum (village)Dashinchilen  West from UB. Another paved off-shoe track to West splits it’s way about 130 km West from this millennium road down to South West and leads it’s way to ancient city of Khubilai Khan Kharkhorum and Arvaikheer, Uvurkhangai aimak. So far these are the major paved roads for Mongolians hopefully in the future they will be able to complete these roads so that the rural nomad’s and other businesses would benefit from these roads, but in the meantime this makes an unique opportunity for overlander’s to explore a vast Mongolian grasslands.
